The primary purpose of this book is for the teaching of soil testing. Can be of value as a reference book for practicing engineers and for personnel in soil laboratories. There are many conditions, such as soil disturbance during sampling and unknown boundary conditions in nature, that require the engineer to use intelligence and experience in applying the results of laboratory tests to an actual soil problem. In many particular problems the results of laboratory tests can do no better than serve as a guide to the designer. For such problems field tests are often required. Even though this book is devoted entirely to laboratory testing, I hope that it will aid the student in attaining the proper perspective on the role of laboratory testing in soil mechanics. CONTENTS: 1) Specific Gravity Test 2) Atterberg Limits and Indices 3) Grain Size Analysis 4) Compaction Test 5) Permeability Test 6) Capillary Head Test 7) Consolidation Test 8) Direct Shear Test on Cohesionless Soil 9) Triaxial Compression Test on Cohesionless Soil 10) Unconfined Compression Test 11) Triaxial Compression Test on Cohesive Soil 12) Direct Shear Test on Cohesive Soil APPENDIEX: Conversion Factors; Specific Gravity of Water; Viscosity of Water; Proving Rings; Drawing of Liquid Limit Device; Derivation of Equations.

The push-pull test is a powerful site characterization technique that has been applied to a wide range of problems in contaminant hydrogeology. The theoretical and practical apsects of push-pull testing were initially developed to characterize groundwater acquifers but the method has now been extended to saturated and unsaturated soils and sediments as well as to surface water bodies. Dr. Istok and his collaborators have been instrumental in the development of these techniques and he is widely recognized as the world’s leading expert push-pull testing. This is the only reference book available on this powerful method.
